Republican Revolt

Fri Mar 17, 2006 at 05:28:05 PM PDT

I've seen lots of articles in the news lately about the Republican congress opposing Bush on some issues. I see some Democrats saying "Look even the GOP is running from him" But I wonder if this is a good idea?

In my mind the GOP congress paved the way for a Korpofascist president, and by pointing out the fact that they are opposing them, the Dems are inadvertently helping swing voters to be able to vote for the GOP still.

To me it would seem that after the GOP goes against the president on some issue that the public disagrees with, what the Democrats should do is try to focus the media and public attention on some issue or peice of legislation that puts the congress on the defensive and makes them stand WITH Bush and against the American people. This might not make Bush look quite so bad, but would possibly help more Dems get elected in congress.

What do you all think? How do you all think the Dems should react when the GOP goes against Bush?

Senator __ is only opposing the President on this issue because of election year politics. He(she) is really a rubber stamp who votes _ % with him.  Senator _ has no conviction and is only paying attention to the polls.

well, I think it's all positioning for 06 elections... I agree with you basically, but what worries me is the tricky balancing act of national vs. local in congress. elections, so we might get the bounce of the current low ratings or we might not--

it would be really sad to think that Bu$hCo is THIS low & yet the local elections don't get enough boost from it to help Dems win enough seats, OY, that would suck bigtime, whew.

"In my mind the GOP congress paved the way for a Korpofascist president"

In my mind, this country has political AIDS.  The failure of the Democrats to function as an opposition party is the immune deficiency.  Bushco is just the opportunistic infection that is guaranteed to appear whenever the immune system is deficient.  If it hadn't been Bush, it would have been someone else, sooner or later.  And if the Democrats don't start standing up, another one will be along soon enough.

"makes them stand WITH Bush and against the American people"

Wow...that's a great idear.  Everyone has been complaining that "We can do better" is too bland a slogan for the Democrats.  How about "We want Congress to stand with Bush and against the American people"?  That would really bring in the votes, I bet.

"would possibly help more Dems get elected in congress"

Speaking as a swing voter, if the Democrats don't have the courage to stand up to Bushco, then I will be forever grateful to any Republican who will.  God knows, somebody has to, and the Democrats sure aren't doing it.  Until they do, I can't see why any sane American would want yet more of them in Congress. Some of us swing voters are crazy enough to think it's more important to stop Bush than to elect Democrats. Go figure.

"How do you all think the Dems should react"

I don't know.  They haven't asked me, so I can't see any point in speculating about it.

  •  Dems should (4+ / 0-)

Put a lead chain on this Albatross and hang it around the GOP's neck.  They should point out, every single time, that these are "Bush Republicans," and point out, every single time, that they voted with Bush every single time an issue came before them, and that every single time Bush was presented with a bill passed by the Bush Republicans, he signed it.  Point out that there has not been a single Bush veto in over 5 years.  Associate Bush with Republicans -- it's not hard.  They've been doing it to themselves for years.  Just hand 'em a fucking anvil and step back while the planking collapses beneath them.
